From up north, two signs of where we are

You’ve hopefully heard about two recent occurrences in Canada: the 16-year-old Muslim girl who was strangled by her father for refusing to wear the hijab, and the Canadian Islamic Congress’s success in getting a federal and provincial Human Rights Councils to look into whether Mark Steyn’s America Alone constitutes hate speech.

So often we hear about things going the wrong way in this world and we shrug and say, “But what can anyone do?”

Suggestions for how to counter these particular dangerous developments can be found here and here.

Murder most foul which I am sure is outlawed by the Canadians as it is in this land. As for freedom of speech, I presume the Canadian constitution addresses that substantial matter as does ours.

Let’s hope so. The bad guys are pressing their position big-time.

We must remain a government of laws, not men. It’s a good thing we got so many rednecks armed here. There will be some serious head banging if these folks really get a hankering to try to really tangle with us, be sure of that. None of those radical Islamic idiots really has a clue of what we are always capable of. They think we don’t have one. We do, bloggie, we really do. Dontcha know? Have some fear, can’t say no fear, but, let’s be realistic and reasonable here. Ain’t no Islamic takeover here or in Canada and I would seriously doubt the UK either. Just ain’t. All there is to it. Trust me, if you cannot believe me on this. We do have more than a clue.

Sounds good, but I can’t help but think of the Empire State Building bathed in green for the end of Ramadan, those British prison toilets refitted to face Mecca, the southern California school that had kids dress in hajibs and recite Koran verses as part of multicultural educational efforts, the radical Muslim with terrorist ties who made it onto the Virginia Human Rights Council. Not good indicators.

Gotta love the American businessman scam with Citi Bank being bailed out by banks in Communist China and Saudi Arabia. Their CEO admits he screwed up and will forego his bonus. What’s up with all that? Is that another threat, beating us at our own game?

It doesn’t help, that’s for sure.

So what was the source of WW III or IV?

It is the birthday of novelist and journalist Dame Rebecca West, (books by this author) born Cicily Isabel Fairfield in London (1892). The author of The Return of the Soldier and Train of Powder, West had a 10-year love affair with the science fiction writer H.G. Wells and also had a romance with Hollywood movie star Charlie Chaplin. Her best-known book, Black Lamb and Grey Falcon, a history of Yugoslavia, started out as a short piece that ended up exceeding 1,000 pages. World War II was at its worst when the book came out, and paper was being strictly rationed, but the publisher decided to print it anyway—they said they felt obliged to issue a book that so convincingly argued that the source World War II lay in the defeat of the Balkan Christians by the Ottoman Turks 550 years before.

That’s a meaty question to dig into. You know what? I think that more than radical Islam or residual Marxism, history will show that the West’s deteriorating sense of its own exceptionalism was the main cause.
I’m finally getting around to finishing From Dawn to Decadence by Jacques Barzun. It traces the trajectory of Western civilization overthe last 500 years, and his conclusion is that it’s culturally and spiritually running out of gas.

  9. Mr. Dings Says:

Running out of gas, but sure kicked a lot of ass. The only way radical Islam will have its worldwide way is through blood and guts and we still have a lot of that left. But, is that the way, truly the way to have our way?
