“Let us not look back in anger or forward in fear, but around in awareness.”–James Thurber (of all commentators on Western culture)

We can “be aware” all day long while our civilization rots and our enemies plot our final demise.

And, yes, it was in poor taste, bad manners, outrageous behavior, to not open with the Star Spangled Banner as protocol prescribes. 40 years ago this Fall, two black men raised their right fists during the awards ceremony following the 200 M final in Mexico City. That’s memorable. What may be forgotten is ten days before the 1968 Summer Olympics celebrations in Mexico City, when police and military shot student demonstrators. The death toll remains controversial: some estimates place the number of deaths in the thousands, but most sources report between 200 and 300 deaths. Government sources say “4 Dead, 20 Wounded”. The exact number of people who were arrested is also controversial. Poor taste, bad manners, and worse.

“Sometimes I lie awake at night, and ask, ‘Where have I gone wrong?’ Then a voice says to me, ‘This is going to take more than one night.’” –Charles Schulz
